"Inspiring Students to Aspire"
I am a graduate from Nanyang Technological University with B.A. (Hons) in Economics and currently a full-time home-based tutor. Throughout my 7 years of experience as a 1-to-1 tutor, I have taught students for the subjects of Primary English, Mathematics, Chinese and Science, Kindergarten English and Mathematics, Secondary Geography & Physics, Adult Basic Conversational English / Chinese classes, JC (H2) Economics as well as Piano. My specialisation would be in teaching kindergarten, primary and secondary school subjects. Students whom I am currently teaching or have taught include those from the Gifted Education Programme (GEP), mainstream cohort, dyslexic and/or autistic children and those requiring special needs (e.g. home-schooled students). Due to the differing requirements of each child, I vary my teaching methods accordingly to what suits the individual best. Furthermore, I am coaching students with dyslexia and mild-autism as well, by using a more personalised approach to help them cope with the mainstream syllabus.  My teaching method revolves around helping students to understand concepts or topics by explaining to them in detail the new content before moving on to giving them questions and exercises on how to apply such new knowledge to test their understanding. I will require each student to complete a certain amount of homework (based on his/ her schedule, any upcoming test or exam and learning style etc) and gauge the student's progress after assessing and marking his / her completed work. In the instance whereby the student has not mastered the concept fully, I will recap with him / her the areas which need improvement on in order to ensure that a better understanding of the question(s) or topic(s) could be achieved. I have been teaching one lower primary student who is diagnosed with mild-autism and three upper primary students who have dyslexia. Another upper primary student is in a mainstream class but has difficulty learning, especially for the languages. To cater to their individual study needs, I had come up with different approaches for them respectively by making learning enjoyable unlike the typical classroom situation. At the initial stages of tutoring these students, I will introduce some forms of non-verbal communication (when required at times for effective engagement) for instance, increased eye contact and the usage of gestures. In the case if the student is responding well, I will acknowledge or reply promptly to help them gain confidence in talking, learning as well as understand the power of communication. More verbal engagement from the student is encouraged when the student is comfortable speaking up after some lessons so as to gain a better overall understanding of their learning progress. In addition, simplified explanations would be used when introducing my students to a new content so that they would not have the impression that the new coverage of a subject is a challenge; but rather, gain a sense of fulfillment by being able to attain key perspectives from each of the lessons. In such a way, learning can be made enjoyable and most importantly, my students will therefore view learning and exploring new chapters as something interesting and beneficial.
Having been tutoring students for 7 years, I have garnered valuable experience in teaching lower and upper Primary students for the subjects of English, Mathematics, Chinese and Science. I specialise in teaching primary level students as I have attained high grades for these subjects, scoring an A, A*, A* and A grade, respectively for my PSLE. In addition, my students are able to achieve significant improvement in grades under my guidance reflected in better scores in class tests and/ or school examinations.
