"Work hard, play hard"
I'm currently a Mechanical Engineering student studying at Nanyang Technological University (NTU). I was also in one of the mentoring clubs in SP and I provide weekly tuition for needy primary school and secondary (till Sec 1) kids in a student care centre at Clementi. Some of them may not be easy to handle but it is always possible if I catch hold of their attention. It is also fun and loving to see the process of learning of these bunch of children because they really learned something with my help and my efforts have really helped them in their work. I always feel that catching the student's attention is the best way for them to understand the content of what they are learning. Like Maths, it is a 'creative' subject to me because it usually have more than one solution to a problem and hence, it is possible for me to engage with the students sometimes through some special examples to let them understand. In addition, a student should be flexible and learn more methods in solving a problem because the one solution that he/she may know may not be the best solution for him/her to understand a problem. However, sometimes I may need more time especially when I think too much or in a more complicated way. But still, some students prefer me to teach them perhaps in Chinese which is absolutely fine to me. Although I'm a Year 3 student, I'm also going for a Diploma Plus in Engineering Maths and Science Certificate. In this course, it covers the foundations of Engineering Maths at the University level. Therefore, I still have some background of Maths although I'm studying in polytechnic now. In fact, most of my modules in polytechnic requires Maths and up till now, I'm still applying Calculus to my daily problems. Most importantly, I feel that I should teach my students how to apply what they've learned in daily lives so that it is easier for them to remember as it will form an impression in their mind. This is especially true in subjects like Science.
