3 Important Reminders in Learning and How A.I. Fits In

12/Dec/2018 by Shanling

School holidays is the most anticipated moment for children. No heavy load of school work, waking up early for school; there’s a certain degree of freedom from pack schedules before, during and also after school. Time seems to be more flexible at one’s perusal, for both parents and children alike.

This is probably the best time for you to scout for good tutors for your children and maybe enrol them in holiday programs to make this December holiday more productive.

Before you get to the selection process, first, you need to make sure your goals are clear. What would you like your child to achieve in the academic year 2019?  Here is a little something that might help.

Skill Acquisition

Long gone are the times where grades are the only measure for intelligence. According to Howard Gardner, there are 9 types of intelligence or potential which children can tap into. For example, if a child excels in a visual spatial game (see prism test below), he or she may appeared to be quite adept in the spatial skills. Mental imagery, spatial reasoning, image manipulation, graphic and artistic skills, and an active imagination are domains which are pertinent to spatial intelligence/skills. It promotes creative and innovative thinking, which may help children in think-out-of-the-box problem solving.

Logical mathematical intelligence, on the other hand, is the ability to calculate, quantify, consider propositions and hypotheses, and carry out complete mathematical operations. It enables your child to perceive relationships and connections using abstract, symbolic thought; sequential reasoning skills; and inductive and deductive thinking patterns. Logical mathematical reasoning can be enhanced from solving arithmetic problems and playing strategy games.

Although some children do better in some than the others, through proper guidance and practice, they can acquire different skillsets necessary for problem solving, both in exam and real life.

Theoretical Understanding

This is the most basic form of knowledge acquisition. Children go to school,  follow the government-set syllabus and build up a repertoire of knowledge, as imparted by well-trained NIE educators. The purpose of this method, is to help children gain sound and evidence-based theoretical understanding; where they learn to see not just the surface, but the underlying facts behind every concept and theory. This is an important part in learning as children undergo rigorous training, practices which requires them to get their critical thinking gear moving. To articulate their thoughts better and make connections between different academic domains.

Application

Without knowledge action is useless and knowledge without action is futile. -Abu Bakr

Now with both skills and theoretical knowledge acquired, it is time for application. Let’s admit that the world advances best when knowledge deliver results. By converting knowledge to tangible actions, your child can further enhance their abilities and advance in their field of interest. Engaging in knowledge application could boost your child’s confidence and further stimulate their curiosity – which was found to promote better subjective well-being.

Therefore, a good tutor/educator makes sure students are well equipped to apply their knowledge to the real-world context (besides in school exams).

Where does Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) fit into the picture?

A.I. is no longer just contained in science fiction films. It is widely applied in education today, in Singapore and worldwide. The Artificial Intelligence Market in the US Education Sector 2017-2021 report suggests that experts expect A.I. in education to grow by “47.50% during the period 2017-2021.”

A.I. can take many forms. At Home Tuition Care, we use SmartJen - a systematic online quiz generator that customise every question upon ‘analysing’ students' performance and abilities, using an automated algorithm. In addition to that, quiz results are statistically analysed and reported in graphs for the purpose of performance tracking.

‘Smart’ and Effective

Students need not concern themselves with quiz questions being too easy or too difficult, as each topic is customized based on their current levels of understanding/abilities.

Grading is automated, so is the progress report. Upon completion of each quiz, all the results will be collected, analysed and interpreted into a graph - all autogenerated, to provide an overview of a student’s academic performance and progress. With the graph, it eases your burden to pinpoint on areas of weaknesses your child can work on.

In SmartJen, we strive to meet every students’ needs as they paved their own path in learning.

A.I. obviously, will not ‘replace’ education but merely enhance it. Look at it as ‘the technical support’ to teachers and students, so time is not wasted on something as trivial as manual marking and progress tracking but invested on something more paramount, such as the quality of lessons and variations in practices.
