"Living is learning to solve problems."
Hello, my name is Lay Cheng. I have a Bachelor's degree in Applied Mathematics from National University of Singapore (NUS). I have 5 years of Mathematics tutoring experience and also accumulated 3.5 years of instruction experience at a Kumon Learning Centre. Over these years, I have built rapport with students between the ages of 8 to 20. Currently, I am tutoring 4 students privately - two Secondary 3 students and two Primary 3 students. As it is important to ensure that the sessions address the concerns of the students and their parents, communication is essential. I have lesson plans but am open to discuss and adjust according to my students’ needs. Hence, I will contact my students or their parents regularly and do advance preparation so that the lessons may be engaging. Other than focusing on their academic ability, I believe that it is important to pay attention to their motivation levels, learning styles and mental health as well. I will put in effort to know them on a personal level so as to build rapport. I am dedicated to helping my students achieve the results that they desire in order to pursue the path of their dreams. I believe in providing a safe space for them to make mistakes, learn from them and try again. I have a testimonial from a student as follows: Ms Lay Cheng, my Math tutor in Poly Year 3, was a dedicated and hardworking tutor who always came to tuition classes prepared with work solutions for the homework she gave to her student. She was an efficient teacher as she would strive to answer any queries that I had regarding my homework as soon as she could via WhatsApp. That level of commitment and initiative shown, had made the process of learning Math concepts and doing Math questions more conducive for me. In addition, she was also understanding and patient. She did her best to encourage her student when her student felt discouraged by the lack of good performance. -Gracia-
My former Secondary 5 student scored B3 at the GCE 'O' level examinations. My current student topped his class in Mathematics last year. Last year, I also tutored a polytechnic student in the module Mathematics for Life Science. Previously, she failed the module twice and if she failed again, she would have to drop out of her diploma program. Under my guidance, she passed the module and could continue pursuing her diploma.
I scored an A in H2 Mathematics during A Levels. For O Levels, I scored A1 for both Elementary Mathematics and Applied Mathematics. In PSLE, I scored A* in Mathematics.
