"Developing a passion for languages"
As a youth, I can empathize with many students nowadays since the memories of taking the ‘O’ levels and ‘A’ levels are still fresh in my mind. Throughout my secondary school and JC days, I always had a strong interest in reading and writing. I was fortunate to top the level in English in the secondary four preliminary examinations in Catholic High and attain the Dean’s list in General Paper twice in Raffles Junior College. As an extension of my interest in reading and writing, as well as formulating arguments, I am pursuing a Law degree in National University of Singapore. Pursuing this degree has further honed my writing, argumentative and oratorical skills which I am able to impart to my students. I specialise in teaching the English subject as I have a strong passion in reading and writing. I hope to inculcate this interest in all my students. Doing well in languages starts from cultivating an interest in it, no matter how daunting it may seem. I adopt a multi-pronged approach towards enabling my students to perform well in their examinations. This includes developing their critical reading and analytical skills, cultivating good writing habits (grammar, vocabulary) and developing them into interesting and engaging writers. More importantly, I aim to eliminate that fear or anxiety that students often experience before a test or exam and enable them to tackle these obstacles confidently. Apart from the English language, I am also able to teach the humanities at the secondary school level, having taken History and Geography at the 'O' levels. Having been taught by stellar teachers in my secondary school, I learnt what’s needed to score at the examinations and what Cambridge markers look for. I am also able to teach Mathematics and Science at the Primary and Secondary school levels.
I have taught 2 students in the past 1 year. I helped my P6 student improve from a B grade at his P6 Preliminary Examinations to an A for the PSLE and he qualified for SJI after the PSLE. I also helped my Sec 4 student improve from a B4 to a B3 for the O Levels in the span of a few months.
I topped the level in English Language in my Sec 4 Preliminary Exams in Catholic High School. I also attained the Dean's List (top 5%) in General Paper twice in Raffles Institution.
