"Firm encouragement, not harsh criticism"
I take joy and pleasure in coaching my students to not just improve academically, but also in character. I seek to build rapport with my students so that we can work together towards a common goal. It takes 2 hands to clap, and both tutor and student has to put in effort and hard work to achieve set goals. I cater to each student individually according to their own pace and style. I also encourage independent learning, so they can cultivate good learning habits even after I stop tutoring them. My style is less of teaching but more of coaching. I am not their school teachers' replacement, but reinforcement. I reinforce whatever has been taught in class, and help them build the necessary foundations to tackle problems. Students under my tutelage will learn through practice and trial and error, so they find the best way/solution that suit their learning style. I drill the concepts into them over and over until it sticks. No point in moving on unless they have gotten the basics/foundations right. Their improvement might not be immediate, but slow and sure. I work closely with parents as well, to keep them updated on their kids' improvements as well as to enlist their aid in monitoring their kids. 2 hours once a week with me is frankly not enough unless the student takes the initiative to put into practice what was taught consistently.
My student, previously from Princess Elizabeth Pri, improved from a fail grade to a consistent A/B.
