"Teaching comes with motivating the child"
I am a patient person. I believe teaching comes hand in hand with motivating children. A good tutor knows how to motivate a child. For me, to best way to do it is to first understand and enter into their world of thoughts. I believe every child has a potential and it is through understanding them and their needs would bring out the best in them.
I had once participated in a student mentoring scheme back in my university days. It was purely volunteer work. I was assigned to 2 boys. One of the 2 boys, he failed 7 subjects out of 9 in secondary 1 when I first get to know him and he hate maths. The key was to understand and motivate him to embrace the importance of studies before I jumped in to teach him maths, his worst subject. He had managed to top the class in the 2nd Maths test after I coached him on a weekly basis. After that test, he knew he could do it. I still coached him along the way be it on his personal or academic related things. He had managed to pass all his 9 subjects in secondary 2 and entered the pure science stream in secondary 3. That was my greatest achievement to help a boy who think that he could never make it to realise his full potential. He is currently studying in a local Polytechnic and I still keep in touch with him and advise him on his engineering related projects.
