I have taught briefly a Primary 5 female student both English and Chinese before. I aim to support the child in his school work and syllabus, not teaching things that are beyond the MOE syllabus. For language, it is crucial that the child first understand the words' meanings, followed by how to use it correctly. Hence, especially for Chinese, it is important to increase the child's vocabulary and improve how the child's writing skills (Paper 1), and then to increase the child's familiarity and comfort with the language, the child has to keep practicing. My job is then to help the child understand the mistakes, as well as valuable exam skills that they may use to find more clues as to what the correct answer is. As for English, at a young age, it is first important for the child to have a strong command of Grammar, which are essentially rules of the language in terms of sentence structure. Following which, we will try to increase the child's comprehension ability, how to break down questions and sentences; and finally increasing the child's vocabulary.
