"Learn to Live"
Having been exposed to the business world and the art of trading during my early days, I always knew that I had a flair for business. I could still recall clearly the period of time when I used to sell boxed-fried rice to my primary school peers. As I was older, I realized that business was indeed my passion and decided to choose Business & Management (B&M) as one of the subjects to be studied during my 2-year IB course. Currently, my father is starting up a new contractor company and I am aware of the many difficulties that are ahead of him. This exciting process induces my curiosity and enthusiasm to observe the complex nature of the business as well as the challenges that come alongside it. With the passion and self-motivation to explore the business world, I am applying for the Bachelor of Business Management. My interest in business has proven to be advantageous in my various academic performances. I have consistently achieved the highest grade (grade 7) for all my tests and examinations in Business & Management over the course of 2 years in IB. In addition, I also participated in a business-related competition called Fed-Ex/Junior Achievement International Trade Challenge in 2009. During my 2 years in IB, I have pushed myself to go out of my comfort zone by taking up various leadership positions in school. Being the Vice President of the Media Resource (MR) team for 2 years, I have learned invaluable lessons about teamwork and leadership. Without the team and most importantly the team spirit, the whole MR team would not be able to function properly. A good leadership style that embraces teamwork as the core principle enables us to grow together as a team. Furthermore, I was appointed as the chairperson of the Life Science Symposium Organizing Committee for 2 years. My school in Singapore, Anglo-Chinese School (Independent), was the host to students from different countries such as Mexico, New Zealand, China, Vietnam, Malaysia and Indonesia. It was an enormous project involving some serious planning, organizing and management skills. One thing that I learned from this project is that without the teamwork and cooperation from all of the 50 student members, especially during difficult times, we would not have been able to carry out the project successfully. Besides engrossing myself in the vibrant and vigorous student life, I am also dedicated to giving back to the society. I volunteered to teach primary 5 and 6 students in Leng Kee Community Centre for 2 years. Not only did I enjoy the meaningful teaching experience, but I also interacted with volunteers from external agencies. After teaching for 2 years, I begin to realize the importance of having a work-life balance. Therefore, I always attempt to juggle my student life with my personal life in order to achieve a more meaningful life. My academic achievements and the leadership positions held in the extracurricular activities in school could not have been complete without my community involvement project. I also a strongly believe that a great leader with outstanding leadership skills will always bring out the best in his/her teammates. Hence, in order to achieve a long-term goal in my life, that is to become a great leader in my own company, I am very eager to enroll in the Business Management course.
I started giving tuition in 2007 in Singapore. I have 3 years experience teaching Mathematics to several primary 4,5 and 6 students. In addition, I taught Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry to six secondary 3 students and two JC students for one year. From my experience, students are able to do well in examinations only if they have practised enough questions and understand the exam questions. It is also important to browse through the marking rubrics in order to tackle the questions accurately. Hence, my method of teaching is to practise and at the same time learn from the mistakes made and from the marking rubrics.
